Dry Screening System for Fine Aggregates
Since May of this year, Kunda Nordic Tsement AS has commissioned a new dry screening complex as part of the expansion of the Aru-Lõuna limestone quarry plant. The objective of the project was to enhance the value of the 0–4 fraction and improve the overall resource efficiency of the production process.
Fraction Upgrading and Resource Efficiency
As a result of the new process, two separate fractions are now produced – 0–2 and 2–5 – enabling more targeted use and maximizing the value of the raw material. This approach reduces material loss and increases the overall efficiency of the production chain.
The implementation of dry screening technology represents an important step toward more resource-efficient production, ensuring that each fraction finds its optimal application.
Apeco’s Role as Main Contractor
The project was carried out in cooperation with the Austrian company Binder+Co AG. Apeco acted as the main contractor, supplying:
- the required conveyor technologies;
- the screening system;
- covered line sections to minimize dust emissions;
- safe and service-friendly walkways;
- integration of the electrical system into the existing infrastructure.
In addition, Apeco engineers participated in the planning phase of the plant expansion from an early stage. This provided the client with confidence in their investment decisions, knowing the solution was technically sound and future-proof.
Why Dry Screening?
The dry screening complex is an efficient alternative to traditional wet screening technology. Its key advantages include:
- significantly lower investment costs;
- reduced operating expenses;
- no need for water treatment systems;
- simpler maintenance and lower energy consumption.
This makes the solution both economically attractive and environmentally responsible.
Part of a Broader Resource Efficiency Project
The new dry screening system is part of the “Kunda Nordic Tsement AS Resource Efficiency Project,” supported by SA Keskkonnainvesteeringute Keskus.
As part of the broader initiative, the mixing unit and crushing system are being reorganized, and a new excavator is being acquired. The integrated solution is expected to result in a 30.9% improvement in resource utilization.
A More Efficient and Sustainable Future
The expansion of the Aru-Lõuna limestone quarry plant, together with the new dry screening system, significantly increases production efficiency and supports the company’s long-term sustainability objectives.
